Wed. and Friday at.1:00 p n THE .USE OF PAPER MONEY. Common to Nearly AU Clvlllisd Conn tries—In um in Various Notion*. Almost, if not quite, all civilized ■ countries use paper money to facili tate payments within their own Juris, diction. The United States use paper money to a greater extent than any other country, and in notes in smaller denomination than any other coun try of equal importance. All of our paper bills except the gold certificates are in the denominations of 81, $3, $5, 810, 820, 850, 8100, 8500 and 81,000; our gold certificates do not appear in de nominations less than 820. The' Do minion of Canada issues 81 and 83 notes, and various banks issue notes varying from 85 to 81,000. Mexico is snes paper money of 10 pesos and up ward and the South American states issue paper of similar denominations. The bank of England issues all Eng lish notes in denominations of £5, £10, £80, £50, £300, £300, £500 and £l,oOa The banks of Scotland and Ireland issue notes of £1 and upward. The bank of France issues notes for 50 francs, 100, 300, 500 and 1,000 francs! The bank of Belgium issues notes of 30 francs and upward. Italian banks is sue notes of 1 lira and upward to 1,000 lire. The bank of Germany puts out notes for 5 marks and upward to 1,000 marks. Austria issues notes of 1 gulden and upward. Russia is the only European country which Issues government notes, its paper money being of the denomination of 1 ruble and upward. Sweden, Norway and Denmark issue by their banks notes for 5 krone, 10, 35, 50 and 100 krone. India does not issue paper money, nor does China now. Japan provides pa per money of 1 yen, 2, 5, 10, 30 and 100 yens, and the other countries, os a rule, issue paper money, the lowest denomination of which is usually ten times the value of the coined unit of value. PERHAPS SHE POUND SOME. Sha Had Hoped to Secure the Help of a Professional Burglar. A citizen in Chicago was on his way home the other night when a shoe came untied and he sat down on the doorsteps of a house to fix things. He was about to go on when a window was opened above him and a woman’s voice demanded: “Say! Are you a burglar?” “No, ma’am,” was the reply. “What are you doing there?” “Just tying up.my shoe.” “Oh, that’s it!” "Did you want a burglar, ma’am?” asked the pedestrian, thinking he de tected a tinge of disappointment in her tones. “You don’t see any around, do you?” “No, not just now, but I presume I can find one somewhere about. Is it anything special, ma’am — anything which won’t keep until to-morrow night?” “No, not bo very special,” she answered. “My husband went away with $15 in his pocket this morning and came home drunk about an hour ago. I’ve been through h s pockets about six times and can’t find a cent and I thought if you were a burglar and could look him over I’d divide with you on whatever you found. Never mind, though. Come to think of it, he always carries his money in his shoes when he gets full and I’ll run down stairs and overahul them?” A. Gentle Rebuke. Once at a family reunion of the New York Potters, ex-Secretary W. M. Evarts, as their counsel, had been asked to dine with them all. There was a bishop, and there was a doctor of divinity, and there were other dis^ tinguished scions of the family-tree present, and the after-dinner speeches had naturally all been on the suc cesses of one another. Then Mr. Evarts was asked to make a.speech. He said that he felt that he reaUy must be excused. In this reverend presence, however, he might be par doned for uttering a paraphrase of Scripture, which had * come into his mind during the speeches of the rest: “Lord, Lord, Thou art the clay and we are the Pottera” • A Pretty Girl Station Afoot. Passengers over the Bumford Falls and Buckfield road always notice upon the platform at East Peru! Maine, a plump and pretty girl who wears the regalia of the station agent. She wears a cap with gold lace and a brass shield, and on the shield is “Station Agent” This is Miss Lillie Howard, and she has had charge ol the station at East Peru for some time. She is attentive to her duties, the trainmen always have a smile and a pleasant word for her, and many a drummer vainly attempts to appropri ate a share of her smiles as the train whisks.past ’Tis needless to com ment on the neatness o< East Peru station. _' Needed. Articles. Mr. Choate, having arrived at the old-sighted age, did not recognise it» or did not wish to commence the use 1 of glasses. In pleading a cause he had difficulty in seeing his notes, and,. in order properly to decipher his manu ; script, kept holding his paper farther and farther oft On one occasion this so annoyed the judge that he at last ' burst out with: “M» Choate, I would advise you to get one of two things, either a pair of tongs or a pair of spectaclea ” Action of Cold and Host. The generally accepted theory of i the cooking of meat relates to the up 1 plication of heat, but Dr. Sawiczev osky has called attention to the fact I that almost precisely the same chem ical and physical changes can be ac 1 complished by exposing animal flesh ' to extreme cold. A Macro Boy Who Wm the Butt of Ilia Companions. Sight little colored boys got on ft Buffalo street car at the corner of Vermont street one evening recently. They had been out to 8t. Mary's to re hearse something or other (they were, choir boys) and they were then on their way to St. Paul's. The women in the cai* talked to thorn, and asked them all sorts of questions* They all talked willingly except one little fellow, who was black as coal, and who seemed to be the butt of the other seven, “So yon all sing?" asked one of tlie women. “Yep,” answered three of • the boys at the same time. “Then you are regular little black birds?” "Oh, no, ma'am. Blackbirds don’t do nothing but chirp. I'm a canary.'* “An' I’m a mockin’-bird,” said an other, and each boy told what kind of a bird he was until the eighth one, the butt before mentioned, was the only one who had said nothing. “And what kind of a bird are yon, my little fellow?'' asked the woman. “Deed, ma’am,” he answered, “I specs I mus’ be a chicken, I get it in the neck so offun.” Hood’s Cures JRm Edna Kyle Chamberlain, Booth Dakota. .
